RTP Explained: Why a Percentage Is Not a Session Refund
Understand what RTP measures, calculate a sample session return and see why a published percentage cannot predict your balance or refund your losses.

A game described as having 96% RTP does not promise to return 96 of your next 100 units. The percentage concerns a mathematical return over extensive play under the stated rules. Your own session is a small set of outcomes, not a withdrawal from a fund reserved for you. Understanding the denominator is the useful starting point.
The denominator is total stakes
Return to player compares prizes with the money wagered. Total stakes, often called turnover, can include the same balance being used again after a prize. It is therefore different from a deposit, starting balance or the maximum amount you intended to spend.
Imagine starting with 100 teaching units. Across a session you place 160 units of stakes because some returns are used again. Prizes total 142 units. With no other transactions, the closing balance is 100 − 160 + 142 = 82 units. The session return ratio is 142 ÷ 160 × 100 = 88.75%. Neither calculation uses the initial 100 as the RTP denominator.
Theoretical and observed figures answer different questions
A theoretical figure describes the game model and its specified settings. An observed figure describes the prizes and turnover in a selected dataset. A short session can be far above or below the theoretical figure without, by itself, proving a fault.
The UK Gambling Commission’s monitoring guidance distinguishes designed RTP from measured performance and considers volatility and the amount of play when assessing deviations. That is a monitoring framework, not a test that an individual player can reproduce from a handful of screenshots. It also does not establish the regulatory status of M2 or any particular game.
A result above 100% is possible in a small sample
If hypothetical prizes were 190 on turnover of 160, that sample’s ratio would be 118.75%. It would describe that sample, not a permanent game setting. Likewise, a low measured session ratio does not create an entitlement to a compensating win on the next spin.
Check which percentage you are reading
Record the complete title, the mode or setting to which the information applies and whether the figure is theoretical or measured. Do not assume that two products with similar names use the same configuration. A promotional maximum prize and a provider-wide reputation are not substitutes for a game’s own information.
If no applicable figure is supplied, write “not confirmed” rather than borrowing one from another operator. This article assigns no RTP to an M2 title and does not certify a provider’s implementation.
Use a session record for its actual purpose
Keep opening balance, stakes, prizes and separate account transactions in different columns. They help you reconcile a balance; they cannot tell you when a future prize will arrive. Do not keep wagering to make an observed ratio approach an advertised number: the additional stakes are additional exposure, and the next outcome can still be a loss.
