Baccarat Scoring: Why 9 Plus 7 Becomes 6
Count baccarat hands, understand Player and Banker labels and separate hand points from payouts, third-card procedures and variant-specific rules.

Baccarat points do not work like blackjack totals. A hand containing a 9 and a 7 is six points, not sixteen and not a bust. Once the arithmetic is clear, the Player, Banker and Tie labels become easier to read. None of those labels tells you the payout or commission by itself.
Use the units digit of the total
In conventional punto banco scoring, an ace is one point. Cards 2 through 9 keep their numerical values, while 10, jack, queen and king contribute zero. Add the values and keep the units digit. The possible hand scores run from zero to nine.
The following are original practice examples, not a recorded M2 round. A king and 6 give six; 9 and 7 give sixteen, which becomes six; 8 and 8 become six as well. An ace and 9 total ten, giving zero points. Unlike blackjack, that zero is a hand score rather than an over-limit penalty.
Player and Banker are two hand positions
“Player” does not mean that every customer must select that hand. “Banker” does not necessarily mean the person operating the casino. They are labels for the competing hands in the round. A Tie result means the completed scores are equal.
Read each side’s final total before matching it with the wager label. For example, a Player total of four and Banker total of seven indicate the higher-scoring hand, but the amount credited still depends on which wager was accepted and its applicable terms.
Initial totals and completed totals are different stages
In conventional punto banco, an initial two-card eight or nine is called a natural. This belongs to the opening deal. A nine assembled after a third card is still a final nine but is not the same description as an initial natural.
Where a natural is not present, third-card procedures determine whether another card is dealt. The Banker’s procedure can depend on the Player’s third card, so “both totals are below six” is not a reliable replacement for the full rule. This article teaches scoring rather than reproducing a drawing chart.
Recalculate after a third card
If a hypothetical hand starts with 3 and 4, its total is seven. Adding an 8 would produce fifteen, whose units digit is five. This is arithmetic practice only, not a claim that a standard seven-point Player hand should draw. Card eligibility and card addition are separate questions.
Do not turn points into a payout formula
A Banker score of six does not automatically imply one universal payout across every baccarat product. Commission, no-commission exceptions, side bets and special versions require their own rules. A high point total also does not tell you a hand’s stake size.

Evolution’s separately named variants illustrate why a familiar game family still needs an exact product name; their features are not assigned to M2 here.
